While seeing a few reviews. I thought that I should try Linux Mint because I want something easy in the long run. However I don’t really like unity, so Ubuntu was out of the question for me. Plus Linux Mint seems to be more new to Linux friendly but that being said I probably have a little bit more knowledge than the newbie to Linux.
I have now worked out how to use the installation so that I could install it to a second HDD so that it doesn’t interfere with my Windows OS at all. Which is what I want because I have had some negative experiences with Linux even though for some strange reason Linux is the OS I would love to be living in. The main problem I have to using it straight off is because of the games side of it, but with Steam making huge strides into Linux that is really positive. Not enough for me however, it is getting there, Civ V for example is now on Linux. The other thing that I am worried about is the fact I have AMD and ATI processor and graphics card and I know that some have had a problem with it. If anyone can give me a definitive answer of how well Linux or Linux Mint specifically would run on this set up I would be grateful. PC:
- Processor: AMD FX 4170 4.2GHz
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3
- Memory: 8GB Kingston DDR3 1333MHz
- Graphics Card: MSI Radeon HD 7770 1GB (R7770-PMD1GD5)
- Hard Disk Drive: 2TB Seagate 7200.14 ST2000DM001
- CPU Cooler: Reference AMD FX 4170 heatsink
- Case: Cooler Master Elite 310 w/ Side Panel Window
- Power Supply: Artic MPS550 550W
- Optical Drive: 24x Optiarc AD-7280S
- Operating System: Windows 8 64-bit
For the time being though I think I will, be keeping my Linux Mint set up in the virtual box although this doesn’t give me a great experience and I would be happy to set up it on an external HDD as long as I can be safe in not burning out my hardware. Also I can’t quite decide whether to go Linux Mint Debian edition or go with the standard install? The rolling install does appeal to me rather than having to do a fresh install every few years in Linux Mint’s case.
Overall I am really happy with the Linux Mint Mate, just so much to decide and whether or not I’m going to burn out my hardware. It is definitely going to be a second choice OS to Windows because I need to get my League of Legends fix and Eve. Let me know what you think of Linux Mint and the edition you think I should take.
Check out my previous days in Linux here, I have learnt a lot in the last week and hope to continue this journey with Linux and what would be awesome you could get in contact with me with your thoughts on any of my social media’s or just comment below.
