Tweetdeck Review
by Stueeeey on Jun.12, 2010, under Computers
Well what to say Tweetdeck is an application for Twitter that helps you keep up to date with everything you want on Twitter. It really has made me consider twitter in a different way and want to use it. The look into Twitter Applications was brought on by my new found interest in Ubuntu and its new social networking adaptations.
The application in Ubuntu is called Gwibber and to be fair to Gwibber it does a really good job however Tweetdeck runs on all operating systems and you can sign up to it to keep all your columns meaning you log in on multiple machines and you will have the same thing without having to manually add them to each machine.
I feel at home with Tweetdeck just a word of warning be careful what search columns you have because I had one for the World Cup and I get 100 tweets coming every 2 minutes.

Unlimited no longer means Unlimited
by Stueeeey on Jun.11, 2010, under Computers, General
For years now people have said they will give you an emailed service for a set amount of money, which nobody really thought of due to the fact these plans were normally quiet expensive. Now in the data hungry world that we find ourselves in unlimited plans have now dropped in price and everyone has unlimited something and companies are fighting back.
You can look at broadband for instance the only ISPs that offer an unlimited option all be subject to fair usage is BT and O2. When Tiscali got taken over by Talk Talk that was the first thing Talk Talk did was get rid of the unlimited stance and replace it with an allowance.
Now O2 customers of the phone variety could be having a shock O2 plan on removing the unlimited stamp on their mobile Internet with the launch of the IPhone 4. They are planning on doing this in order to build a faster network.
What do you think good or bad?
Update
O2 aren’t even being competitive with their pricing for example 10mb on 3 is £2.50 and 1gb is £5 o2 want £10 for 1gb

Worried about your Mac and Spyware?
by Stueeeey on Jun.05, 2010, under Computers
According to the Washington Post there has been an increase in spyware that has been able to infect Macs and cause some concern. While reading this article I started to think about the operating systems them selves and the fact that as a base both Linux and Mac are the same sort of operating system as they are both based on Unix.
Reading the article the conclusion is that you theory you shouldn’t be worried about spyware and viruses for your Mac just yet because there are so few out there it doesn’t warrant the expense of running an anti-virus. Now this seems a bit odd however thinking about how Linux works as I haven’t had any experience of a Mac I could understand it. Unlike Microsoft’s operating system Windows. Linux does not seem to be able to suffer drive by downloads, or infections of that nature as everything that is downloaded or copied to the machine never has the ability to execute on your system straight off the bat.
What does that mean?
It means that yes the infectious file could be downloaded and be store on your system somewhere but unlike windows it would not be able to run without you setting it be able to run and install.
I know there will become a time where users of Macs and Linux will have to think about security a little more however for the time being I do believe both users are safe for the time being as long as they are only installing programs that they trust. The increase in spyware though for the Mac format does show that Mac is growing against Windows for people to take the time to write the spyware for the alternative operating system.

5 Charged over Malware Scam
by Stueeeey on Jun.01, 2010, under Computers, Current Affairs
If I’m honest this has interested me seeing this unfold, as it stands the authorities have nailed it down to 5 people that benefited from the malware which accumulated into gaining $450,000 illegally with what is known as scare-ware. For you that doesn’t know what scare-ware is, scare-ware would be fake anti-viruses telling you that you have an infected machine and that you need to buy their product in order to remove them.
Although this is has been a regular and everyday thing seeing these sorts of things on the net this is the first time I have noticed that the authorities have actually found the people related to the scare-ware and done something about it. The big question is now though is that they are trying to find the person that installed it on a banks computer. The problem with this is not only should that system of been locked down so these things didn’t happen why would you want to find out who installed it if you have the creators?
The creators are the ones that benefited yes OK there is an off chance that the person installing it knew what they were doing but if they didn’t can they really charge them?
What’s your opinion should the person that installed it be prosecuted even though they might not known what they are doing?

After a week of Ubuntu
by Stueeeey on May.28, 2010, under Computers
After a week Ubuntu what’s the verdict?
Well if I am honest I’ve always liked the idea of being part of a community and with Linux you get that. It is still not the mainstream and the way in which open source is you always get the feeling of belong to something no matter what sort of size it gets too, so I am enjoying that side of things.
However that aside I am starting to find I spend more time in Ubuntu then Windows, due to the fact it seems quicker then Windows everything loads quicker, even surfing the net seems quicker, The major thing for me is the fact that because its free then I know that if I want a can put it on all my machines and have the same set up on each, meaning that I don’t have to think oh that software’s on my other machine.
The new edition to 10.04 is the social networking add in where you have the ability to put everything under one thing your instant messaging, email and social networking into one place. Although this has had a mixed response by Ubuntu users I myself think its a great idea. It really helps me with my blogging and use of twitter.
Anything that I want to do I can do and quickly I think it is due to the fact that you don’t have services running that you don’t need with Ubuntu except possibly the social networking in which that can be uninstalled if you don’t want. I know its naive to say you don’t need security but if your behind a router and don’t install from untrustworthy places then you don’t need one running on Linux because of the way it is built.
I also the like the way you can download and install the latest version of Ubuntu without having to buy new license and not needing to format the drive in order to do so.
The only thing stopping me from doing a full swap is World of Warcraft so come on Blizzard come out with a Linux version.
